I have a longstanding interest in ecclesiastical art and in 2015–2016 is was the inaugural Bishop Otter Scholar in the Diocese of Chichester. In this role, funded by the Bishop Otter Trust and supported by King’s College London, I was a sort of ‘scholar in residence’, researching and facilitating engagement with art in the Diocese, with a particular focus on Chichester Cathedral.
I ran a series of discussion groups about art in the Cathedral that I documented in several blog posts and reports, gave a public lecture about the Piper Tapestry to mark its 50th anniversary that led to a journal article on this work, and collaborated on an audio pilgrimage trail to and around the Cathedral.
Chichester Cathedral Art Pilgrimage Trail
I co-curated this trail for the app ‘Alight: Art and the Sacred’ with Ben Quash. It guides the pilgrim through Chichester to the Cathedral and offers twelve audio reflections on works of art in the Cathedral. I commissioned, recorded and edited nine of the audio reflections; contributed two reflections, and provided research assistance for the walking tracks. Developed with Calvium Ltd, in association with King’s College London. Funded by the Jerusalem Trust and the Diocese of Chichester.
